There is a certain air of mystery
surrounding this exhibition.
Why, known until now mostly for my public responsibilities, have I decided to show some of my
paintings at this moment?
And why do so in China rather than first in France?
This double and gentle mystery is, in fact, easily explained. Although my love for art goes back to my
youth, my work as a painter is relatively recent—about fifteen years.
During this time, however, I
wanted to avoid any confusion between my official duties and my paintings.
Choosing Shanghai for this first exhibition seemed, in response to a generous invitation, an excellent
symbol: I have devoted much of my life to building bridges rather than walls.
This exhibition in China
will, moreover, be followed next year by another one, this time in France.
And yet, in the poet’s enigmatic and beautiful words, “Je est un autre” (“I is another”). It is this “I” and
this “other” that I now invite you to meet.
I wish you a wonderful discovery.
